Riots in Dublin
Wow, I just saw some of the footage from the riots against the Orange parade in Dublin yesterday... unbelievable :o

Most of the shots are from Nassau street, running down the side of Trinity...

Scangers. Do they even know what they're protesting against?

A lot of people were just in it for the general opportunity to loot and pillage - most of the shop windows round O'Connell St, and Nassau St will attest to this. Judging by the shouts I heard on Saturday, there were a fair few scangers taking advantage of the general mayhem. Other elements of the crowd were organised and in constant communication via mobile phone(with handsfree sets, allowing them to chat and wield lump hammers at the same time - I can see the ad. for O2 now :) )...

Yea, thats the impression I get... people just taking advantage of the situation. I heard that one of the guys that worked in the Centra on Westmoreland Street got beaten up by some people when he went outside yielding a pole to try and stop people from looting his shop :(

He probably came off worse than Charlie Bird, who was set upon by two guys shouting "Charlie Bird, you Orange bastard!"...he was rescued by two plainclothes policemen and came away unscathed, save for a ripped coatsleeve, bad hair and the world's smallest band-aid over his left knuckles(though I feel for the guy, unfortunately that came across as a little comic on RTE news later on) The Irish Govt, Dublin City Authority and the Gardai are currently sitting down with each other to a nice round of "The Blame Game", in the absence of any other focal point to pin it on. More hardline Unionist elements are, surprisingly touting Sinn Fein as the main target, and again clamouring that they won't share power with an organisation so tied to violence criminality etc etc...and the spin goes around and around and around....was purpose of the march deliberate provocation? Should an alternative route have been taken(either not past the site of the 1916 rising and/or not down a street which has been an impossible-to-secure building site for the last 4 years? Would it have made any difference? Did the Irish gardai fail to prepare for the "obvious" likelihood of altercations? Who were the organisers of the riot? It's a tough one to call whichever way you look at it...

He didn't have a lump hammer.
Possibly it was just a pretext to attack him, possibly since
he's reported on the situation in the North objectively, he's seen
as some kind of Unionist sympathizer? Possibly I'm giving them too much credit on the political analysis side of things? Refer to original scanger comment...
